Here is the email I sent to netgear support, this is the second time I have seen this problem with the same router only on the first one it was so bad that I had to take it back and get a new one, it would just keep dropping connection no matter what...this one only drops if something is in the DMZ, and the system that is in the DMZ doesn't even have to be on, as long as there is an IP addres in the DMZ field of my router it will give me heartache.....I am at a loss for what the problem is short of it being garbage.
any info would be appreciated.
"Hello,
I am writing this in the hopes that someone there might be able to assess my situation and assist with an ongoing problem I have had with the two netgear RP114 routers I have purchased.
Some info....
I am using Charter Cable in Massachusetts for my ISP and a Motorola SB4101 for my cable modem, my computers are running Windows XP and Windows 98, and there is also an Xbox connected to the system. I have a Netgear RP114 router which I purchased a few months ago, actually this is my second as I exchanged the first due to a faulty unit (could not hold a connection).
The problem that I seem to have is whenever I put one of my machines into the DMZ it seems to sporadically drop my ability to connect to web sites while I can still use things like AIM and other messaging apps, with the only recourse being to wait a while for the connection to reset, or I can force reset it by releasing and renewing the WAN adapter.
This was not a problem before as I did not need either of my PC's in the DMZ, however now that I am using Xbox live it appears that my xbox will only connect if the Xbox is in the DMZ, what is even more interesting is that I can turn on port 3074, assign it to the Xbox ip and I still will not be able to connect even though the Xbox diagnostic will say that everything is in order, but if I put the Xbox in the DMZ, Connect and then while connected remove the Xbox from the DMZ and just leave port 3074 open I can sign out and sign into Xbox live as much as I like, until of course I turn the Xbox off.
If I don't put anything in the DMZ my connection is solid, however if I put a system into the DMZ, even if that system is not powered up and accessing the network I will have connection instabilities.
Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated before I decide to ditch this for a linksys."
