Is my NEC 3500a DEAD?

Have had it for Since August of last year, burn quite a bit with it.

Currently using Firmware 2.58 and just switched back to 2.19

Regaurdless of the disc I put in (DVD) it doesn't read it, acts like nothing was in the drive. Not reading CD's either.. Pop it in my Lite and it reads the CD right away.

The drive ejects and closes just fine.

Do they just randomly die? I got the form from NEC for an RMA, will they cross ship?
Do they pay postage the other way?

LMK.

Cheers.

Weird.

Just took out SW: Republic Commando from my LITE ON, put it in the NEC with no luck. Take it out of the NEC and now the LiteOn doesn't see it..

Something with the IDE controller possibly?

WTF!!!!

Here are a few things you can try:

Try replacing the IDE cable.
Turn of Windows XP CD burning services (IMAPI).
Disable/uninstall packet writing programs if applicable.
Use the generic Microsoft IDE Controller drivers instead of Nvidia or Via, etc.
Try installing the drive as a solitary master, isolated on it's own IDE channel and test again.

You have to turn off your computer and turn it back on for the firmware to go into effect and for the drive to function again.
It's has lost dvd funtionality after flashed.
It's a known problem with nec drive, with liteon you can flash and use immediately
