Is my motherboard or modem dying/dead?

The last couple of nights that I have tried to get on the internet with my modem have been frustrating to say the least. The first night, my modem would connect, but it would not verify my username and password. I got to thinking about it, and I switched the PCI slot the modem was in the next night. Now, the modem would connect and verify username and password, but it would not allow me to reach any websites or ping anything. I called my friend who has the same internet service as me to see if it could be the service and not my computer, but he could connect and do all the things I could not. Later that night, I brought my modem over to his house and plugged it into a machine that had the very same motherboard as mine (abit BX6 R2), and it worked perfectly.

Now to my question. Could it be the modem or the motherboard? If in fact it is the motherboard, what would be a good replacement. I have a p3-850. It is slot-1, so keep that in mind when offering suggestions.

yah, but my modem used to work fine. Then one day, it said, "Forget you. I don't want to work anymore." It's all confusing. I haven't messed with irq settings in my bios for any of my devices in the past, keeping in mind that they have all worked the first time I plugged them in. And this modem has worked in my computer since I bought the modem. It just stopped working around Sunday.
