Is my monitor permanently dead? It was flickering and changing color, now there's no power...

For the last few months the monitor was flickering and it would, at times, change to a greenish hue.

Yesterday when I turned it on I could not even get the green power indicator light to come on.

Is it time to kiss this one goodbye?

The monitor is about 5 years old.

Thanks.

I've had monitors do similar things -- I usually take them to the local TV repair shop and get a quote on how much it would cost to fix them up. Some of the price quotes have been pretty reasonable, but often (unfortunately) it costs as much to fix the old monitor as it would do buy a new one (especially with all the on-line promotions and coupons available now).

try Repair FAQ because you may be able to repair the monitor yourself for under $20 unless the picture tube or flyback transformer has gone bad (unlikely). Suspect a power supply chip or transistor, horizontal output transistor, or electrolytic capacitor (especially any rated for 100 volts or more), but first re-solder the pins of the video connector because energy-conserving monitors are designed to shut down almost completely if they can't detect a video sync signal.

Geoff2K is right about TV shops - much better than computer shops for monitor repairs, and usually cheaper despite the techs being competent.
