it only works at 60 hz at every resolution now, used to be at 85hz at 1280x1024 but now only 60hz same goes for 800x600, 1024x768 ever resolution, its a 20" HP a4331d, any ideas?

Sounds like a driver problem to me, the last couple of times I lost a moniter it just died, there was no deterioration.

I've alway had trouble getting my Radeon 8500 to stay in 85hz. I've had to enable or disable dual monitors to get it working. Otherwise, it's stuck in 60hz.

how do i do that?

Most of the dead monitors that I have dealt with slowly gave up over time. The picture would shrink so I would lower the resolution. It would work for awhile then shrink again until I lowered the resolution again. I have a 14 inch at home that will only do 640x480 now and the picture is only about 7 inches of viewable area! My guess is that after they get older, they can keep up with the higher resolutions. Sometimes it takes a while to happend, like several months. If this is the case, then your monitor is on the way out.

Go into Display properties and click advanced. There's a tab to handle multiple displays. Just click the button that disables or enable the second monitor. You'll need the ATI control panel installed.
