So there was a huge power surge last night, not a complete black out, but it was kinda like a brown out where the lights go down then come back. anyway, i guess the power went "down" enough that the computer turned off, then turned back on. but then turned back off again. i started smelling some burning i opened up the case and just let it air out. and i let it be until today. so i try to turn it on today but it just flashes the power led and nothing turns on. when i first started looking inside the yellow led next to the PCI slots and the yellow led next to the ram were on. then just now, only the yellow led next to the pci slot is working and the ram isnt on.

what do you guys think? is it the processor or the motherboard? i thought it might be the powersupply but i tried my brothers which works with his computer and still no go in mine. what do the led lights mean on the motherboard?

i've got a DFI nf4 ultra with an AMD 64 3700+.

thanks guys

The only way is to swap out, or to invest in a post card - even that wont point you directly at the prob most likely

Ok well first thing, use a surge protector allways, my guess is it took out your motherboard. Possibly damaging other components ram etc. If your friend will let you try swapping out as montag suggested.

Pull the motherboard and check it visually - you're looking for melted plastic around the ATX power socket, and PCB tracks that look burnt, and blown capacitors. Capacitors are the cylindrical components marked with a value in microfarads (like 220uF) and they bulge when they fail.

If you find any of this the motherboard is gone, get a new one and use it to test your other components
