<< On the Troy scale for precious metals, 12 oz in a pound . . . but I don't know why. 16 oz = 1 lb 8 oz = 1 cup 2 cup = 1 lb? Screw it all and use the metric system. >>
No... ounces can either be weight or volume. When talking about cups or fl. oz. then it is volume and I think it is an american standard measurement, not metric. When talking about oz. and lbs. it is weight, and again an american standard. If it were in metric, it would be grams and liters.
