Is my Linksys router stopping me from upgrading?

I am trying to upgrade to a new Linksys WRT54GL from a BEFW11S4 Router. So I tried setting up through the HTTP first but that didnt work so I used the CD the WRT54GL came with and it will not allow me to connect to internet.

The reason I think the old router is messing me up is because I cannot connect to the internet even with my DSL plugged directly into my comp. I reset the DSL and computer many times but it does the same thing the new router does when I am connected to it, No Internet. When I plug the old BEFW11S4 back in the internet works flawlessly.

Is it possible my old router is holding on to my ip or mac address or something and it needs to be cleared before I can access the internet directly through the modem or through a router?

It sounds like you will need to call your ISP and register the new device with them. Simply setup your network like normal with the Linksys device between the modem and the rest of the computers. Then call your ISP and tell them what you did, they should be able to take care of the problem.

DSL usually works with ID and Password, and have to be configured for PPPOE.

Your old Router probably has the ID and Password typed into the PPPOE's Menu.

You have to do the same with the New one.

It is a Dynamic DSL connection that does not use PPPoE.

Have you called your ISP yet? You need to register the new MAC with them.

If it is MAC (which I doubt with DSL), it is just a matter of cloning the MAC of the current unit to the New unit.
