this is Epox 8KHA+ motherboard with QPS 24x10x40 drive (pretty sure its rebadged BENQ tho)

so about 2 months ago, all of my burns (same media) went from a consistent 4minute average to 7minute average. these are mostly music cds and what-not. at first i thought the cd burner was taking a dump on me. then, after that, when i install a large program from the cd drive, id occasionally get reading errors, like a certain file cannot be read... usually after the 2nd or 3rd try the full program would install. couldve been a bad scracthed cd, or just more signs that the drive was going bad on me.

then this week, i burned 3 disks for mandrake linux, and tried to install that, as well as 2 other games. the disks burned fine, as always, but it just burned slow (7min). however, on the installation of linux and the 2 games, id get a bunch of reading errors again. this time i know it wasnt because of the disks because my friend installed the same game on his computer just fine.

to see if it was really my cd-drive, he and i switched drives. with his CD-RW drive in my computer, i got more reading errors trying to install aforementioned games... while he successfully installed those games using MY DRIVE on his computer.

so this is really really really bugging me. is it common for the ide channel of a motherboard to mess up? i have the latest hyperion via4.45 drivesr and stuff
