Try the IBM Drive Fitness test first. You can download a copy at the link below:

If you're still in doubt after the drive test, try e-mailing or calling their storage tech support. I never had to RMA any IBM drives (my drives are still running perfectly *knock on wood*) but I have asked them very tough questions before and I think they're very well trained and very "top notch".

Good luck.

Did you say it was an IBM hard drive? Yes its dying. Every IBM I've had has died on me (2 of them). I have western Digitals now.

well it's within 3 years of manufacture but OEM! still, suggest you try backing up & get in touch with IBM to see if they would rma it.
you can but try!

1. backup as much as you can before the drive totally dies...
2. check out ibm's website and see if you can create an RMA online (I know western digital allows this) or else call ibm's toll free # (I don't know it, but I know they have one :))
3. get an RMA # and then ship the drive off to ibm (this is assuming they do it the same way as western digital) and they'll check it over and send out a new one...

It's not hard to do, I've had to do it once, not the funnest thing in the world to do, but hey, if it was in 98, they'll give you a newer hard drive!
