Is my i7 idling too hot?

Hi,

I am posting here because I got worried after some comments from a friend of mine.

I have an 920 i7 CPU overclocked to 4.0GHz @ 1.400v at the moment. My room ambient temp averages @ 26 Celcius. According to CoreTemp v0.99.4.65 are cores are idling around 46-47 Celcius mark. On full load (Prime95) it peaked at around 86 Celcius.

Is my card running too hot?

Given the ambient temps, both idle and load temps are fairly hot for my liking, others may think different...

You didn't mention what cooling are you using, it might be normal if it's not top-of-the-range air cooler or water, as i7s do like to get hot at that clock and voltage.

holy crap 86c is insane I would back down asap before you melt the polar caps LOL.
I would look into better cooling even maybe water if you are in a hotter region.
My system in my sig running 4.0ghz using a noctua u12p 120mm push pull config gets 55-60c max load temp.
I dont know what others are getting for there temps but I just though I would share what I was. getting to give you a picture where you should be at.

That is really hot. Try reseating your cooler or get a better cooler. Your chip's going to burn out at this rate.

I know thats what I'm saying.
I am actually scared for you.
I though my cpu running at 60c was hot but dang 86c is like scortching hot!!
you should back it down to 3.2-3.6Ghz at 1.25v at tops for now
