Is my HD dieing?

I?ve had my WD 1200JB for about 4 months now and just recently it started making this annoying whine noise. It never stops always there wasn?t there before. Also twice now it?s made this even worse noise on start up. The first time it did it I believe is when the annoying whine started and just today it did it again on boot. Sounds like a dust buster firing up NOT HEALTHY AT ALL. But once the comp is booted and I?m in windows the really loud noise stops and I?m just left with this annoying whine.

Could my HD be on its way out? Is their a chance it could fail or does this happen once they have been broken in? Do you think a stores warranty (had the machine custom built, not built myself so it has a warranty) would cover something like this, if I wanted it replaced because of the whine and the possibility it may die?

1) Backup all of your critical files asap
2) DL the WD utilities off their website and run the disk diagnostic software, it should tell you the status of your drive

The hdd may be on its way out, but I doubt it. To be sure use the WD diagnostic program.

See if the store will replace it with a Seagate. You my have to pay the difference because the Seagate's usually cost more.

You also have a warranty with WD. The drives are warrantied not who owns or builds the machine. WD doesn't even request a receipt if you have to RMA the drive, they use the serial number to know the date made and also use the diagnostic info.

Backup, backup, backup.
