Is my hardware dying or is it software related?

Hi, just recently my computer has started to become really frustrating where the monitor would lose video signal and the fans in my computer would speed up after the following as occurred (pretty random):

Booting up into windows xp, after windows has finished loading
Before booting up into windows xp
Sometimes booting into safe mode
After the login screen appears
Starting an anti-virus program
Sometimes when the computer is idle

Some fixes that have worked for me that let me boot back into normal windows (maybe by luck):

Booting into safe mode and system restore to a checkpoint
Removed a defective network card but the problem still exists

All the cases appear to be quite random and I have tried to diagnose this and find a pattern for a day or so but I've had no luck. I have even replaced my hard drive and do a clean reformat but I guess that wasn't the problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

First guess is the psu or the line voltage since it does not appear to be thermal related. Since it also happens when booting into safe mode, it is not likely (though not impossible) to be a driver issue. Even if it were a corrupt Windows file(s), it would probably present an identifiable pattern.

I have an Antec TruPower 430W this is what my system looks like:

amd athlon xp 3000+
nforce2 mobo
wd 80gb
wd 250gb
bfg 6800gt oc
creative audigy soundcard

Hello, I replaced the video card with new drivers and it seemed to fix the problem until about 1 1/2 days later the computer suddenly shut off. When I try to boot up, it takes me to the safe mode selection menu, and if I choose either safe mode, last best config, or normal, it loads really slow and then it reaches the Loading windows xp screen. After it finishes, the computer restarts... I have tried everything from bareboning the system to replacing the thermal paste on the processor. Any ideas?

If you replaced the video card and it now doesn't boot up into windows anymore (even in Safe mode) that usually means your video driver has become corrupted.

Reinstall Windows and use the recovery console to fix your installation. That should let you go into windows and re-install the latest video drivers.

Ok, I decided to reformat instead, everything is cool so far but the Windows XP still takes a really long time to load. Any ideas?

Actually, you just described everything I've gone through awhile back, even the super-slow XP loading! The only thing I didn't have was the issue with the fans... I finally realized my motherboard had incorrectly set the voltages on my DDR memory wrong, it was giving them 2.6v when their specs called for 2.85volts minimum. I suggest checking both your memory voltages and also the timings on them.
