is my harddrive enclosure the problem?

So I thought my original harddrive in my BYTECC USB2.0 external enclosure was fooked since it was a 3 year old 40 gig IBM deathstar that had seen a lot of wear and tear (it was my primary music disk and bittorrent holder). Lately it's been acting up on me in the sense that if I was doing something on bittorrent my harddrive would just disappear (getting disk errors in system logs). If I was listening to music and I opened up warcraft 3 there was a 100% chance that the harddrive would disappear.

So I went to Fry's got a 160 gig for 69.99 (I love Fry's) and popped that new one into my external and the same thing happens! I'm thinking of a few things right now:

1. my usb2.0 is crapping out
2. my external casing is crapping out
3. my power supply is crapping out

However, I have an antec truepower 550 so I really don't think it's the power supply (stable rails and all). My usb2.0 ports have been working fine (mobo is ASUS a7n8x-e deluxe), but maybe something is wrong with the mobo since I recently switched to onboard audio?

Anyway, suggestions?

just as an update....the old harddrive does indeed work. i think it's just the harddrive overheating then, but if that's the case, is it a normal thing for the computer to just stop recognizing it?

What does the event log say? Post the errors.

If you put the drive inside your computer, does the same thing happen?
