Is my hard drive the cause for my lockups?

I've been getting allot of full system lockups in the last month. The lockups happen at the same time I hear a singular heavy "clunk" come out of the hard drive. After the system locks up the hard drive seems to crunch in a quiet fluttering repeat unlike the random crunching that they normally have.

Seen it many times before. If it never did this before and just started doing this, backup your important data and get that drive replaced - ASAP. Sounds like your drive is about to fail. That "clunk" you hear is an early indication of drive failure. Maxtor has 3 year replacement warranty on their drives.

I second that.
One day you'll hear even heavier clunk
and your drive will be gone for good.
Personal experience, (sigh...)

My hard-drive did a similar thing. Locking up, clunking sounds etc. I ran the maxtor diag and got the error code and called up maxtor. Turned out to be a bad sector. I set up a RMA and got my new Hard-drive.

I've had every make of drive fail, but seem to have a serious problem with maxtor's and WD's...
