Solved! is my gpu dying? i cant tell what is happening here

hi all!

my pc, in the last few weeks, has started doing this:

this past weekend, i took it all apart, dusted everything out, and the gpu was fairly dusty. got it all cleaned up, put it back together and it has been sounding normal, until tonight it started doing this again.

it happens mostly when i am gaming, but also when i am not gaming. and sometimes it happens for 20 mins or so during gaming, and then just stops for hours. this is why i am guessing it is gpu related, but im not sure.

here are my pc specs i got from the building part of the forums:

i built this in late 2019, these parts are just a little over 2 years old
however, my gpu was carried over from my previous pc and is a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 which was bought in late 2018.

is the gpu just dying? or is something else going on here? is this even an issue other than being loud and annoying? is there something i should be checking for? i know this isnt much to go on, so i apologize.

It is probably time to dust, then clean off and redo the thermal compound on your 2070. Possibly the thermal pads too; check those out when you take it apart.

You can also set a custom fan curve in afterburner and see if that stops the ramping up and down issue.

BTW, it is good to see you here. Wish it was under better circumstances though.

You can check the event viewer for errors. You can also install https://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed
Other common causes are the power supply starting to fail and bad ram.
Installing https://www.hwinfo.com/download/ to check temps and voltages is recommended too. Another good app to install is https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/ to check the health of your SSDs and HDDs.

just wanted to update here, apparently this was actually an issue with some graphics settings in WoW, of all things. changing vsync and tweaking some FPS settings. i changed them and this hasnt happened since. at least my gpu is clean now tho. thanks for the info @DAPUNISHER !
