Is my friend's HDD toast?

I've been attempting to install XP for a friend of mine...I transferred his important files over to my rig, did a full NTFS format of his drive using the XP boot discs (he tried to install XP over Win98 and it completely corrupted the OS, hence I had to use the boot discs) and then start the install of XP and get "cannot continue with XP installation, disc may be damaged" error message. Is his HDD screwed up or am I just doing something dumb? It's an IBM Deskstar BTW.

Sounds more like WinXP is having troubles reading from the CDROM. Make sure that your CD is clean and free of dirt.
