Is my friend Plextor dead?

My friend think he got a dead cdrw. I think so too, but I need more opinion on the matter. Some of the symptoms includes:
does not read cd (Tested on 2 comp.), the light on the front blink twice and turns amber, and an error msg,"the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." Is this CDRW dead?

I've resolved a similar issue with a Plextor CD-RW just by using the windows flash utility to update it's firmware. Just go Hereand download the one for his drive and follow the directions. Good luck

Do not give up hope as plextor makes one the best burners out there on the market.
