My floppy drive light stays on the whole entire time my computer is on. I switch all the cables to see if i plugged it in right and it has the same result. On top of the it doesnt do anything when i insert my floppy or try to load it. But device manager in windows says theres nothing wrong with it. It worked fine until i rebuilt my comp a few days ago. Has this ever happened to anyone?

what kind of geek are you for asking this, and not just having a spare one around to replace it with?!?!??!

god willing, its fried. get a new one, or move on, i cant recall the last time i used mine.

do you really use it anyways? the floppy drive is a really simple device. if you know you did everything correctly and its still not working, my best advice is for you to get a new one or invest in a jump drive.

the light always on means your floppy cable is backwards 😛

Seriously? I had the same problem. I thought I fried it because it came unplugged and I plugged it back on while the computer was on, and the wrong pins touched causing my computer to shut down.

Usually but not always does.
*Goes and stares at the floppy graveyard in his garage, btw if you plug the floppy power cable in backwards you get a nice light show.

Hi, Just a thought. You did switch only one end of the cable? Floppy cable can go only one way and that's usually with the color stripe on the edge of the wires toward the power connector on the drive. Otherwise the CABLE SELECT twist will not be correct and the drive can not work. The A: drive connects with the twist between the MB and the A: drive. Getting it backward usually does no damage to the drive, but does blow the disk if one is in the drive. Hope this helps a bit, Jim

Edit: Forgot to mention: Lite stays on all the time when the cable is reversed. Wont damage drive, but does blow the disk if one is present. If putting the cable on correctly doesn't fix the problem then the drive is bad. Jim

Hi JMD, Good going. There is no substitute for spare components. Easiest trouble shooting is with known good spares. I happen to have a stack of good floppy drives and other junk. Jim

This is question number 1 that gets asked most often on the CompTIA A+ exam. The floppy drive light is on because the ribbon connecting the drive is reversed or upside-down. Windows cannot see it since it's unable to communicate with the motherboard. The light being on is the classic tell tale of what you did wrong in this case.

i tried it both ways... didnt work. I might have had a floppy in while i plugged it in wrong and some1 stated that fries the floppy. I tried it in another computer and no luck. I will try another one today to see if it works.

Check the motherboard and make sure the red wire lines up with pin1. Also check the BIOS settings to ensure that floppy support is enabled.
