Is my DVD burner on its last leg?

This a rather old burner, a +R/-R 4x Sony. It has been working great until my last batch of RiTek 8x +R. The first half of the batch burned fine but now every other disc on the last half are coasters.

I'm using DVD Shrink v3.2. The error messages are: Error reading data and the other is Power calibration failed. For the Error reading data, I thought my temp drive to store the image was too fragmented and cause the read error so I defragged it but I'm still having the problem. I also tried burning at the lowest speed 2x but still no go.

The only thing left is to try a different batch of blanks. It's weird though that half would burn just fine and the rest are coasters. These are Ritek ordered from newegg.

Sounds like the media. When I used generic media on older burners I used to get power calibration errors.

Other Tips:
If this is an older PC you may want to defrag your hard drive also as older burners usually dont have buffer underun technology so if your drive is too slow for the burn you get a buffer underun and a coaster.

Ritek is crap. I dont care what anyone says but let me prove it.

jtvang125: Look at the inner ring of the disc and see if there are any bubbles or disc seperation. I bet there is. I bet a few of those discs can be pulled apart in layers.

Ritek about a year ago switched dye and manufacturing took a turn for the worse. They just dont make a quality disc any more.
