Is my Duron really this crappy ?

I unlocked my new Duron 650 today, but I can't even get a post at multiplier x7 or better. I tried setting the multiplier at x6, and that worked, and I could boot at 650 MHz with multiplier set at x7 before I 'took the lead' to it ...
I tried boosting the voltage bit by bit to 1.85V, still nothing.

I can overclock the chip to 715 MHz by setting the FSB to 110 MHz without boosting the voltage, so I would assume that I would be able to boot at 700.

I haven't got a clue as to what's going on here, any suggestions ?

Sounds like you did not connect the L1 bridges correctly. Try redoing them, preferably using a magnifying glass.

dont want to start a flame war, but just because it dosent overclock to how much you think it will dosent mean its crappy.

Try using the rear window defogger kit that several people here have used successfully. Sometimes the pencil trick just doesn't work. The kit can be found at an automotive store.

Tontod:

I didn't mean crappy like that, I like the chip no matter what, but I'm still hoping for a nice overclock.

A-master1:

Yup, it'll be running SETI, and I bought another network adapter so my 'old' Katmai can run too.
We're about to catch up with you again ;)

CHHAS: If your processor won't go higher than 715MHz, and you manage to get 7x100 working, I would stick to the 6.5x110, since it's slightly faster, and more improtantly, you're running all of your other components (RAM, PCI devices, video card, ...) a little faster.

I redid the pencil stuff today and I'm now running at 900 MHz :)
Temperature under full load (SETI) is 41C/105F which should be fine.

Thanks to you all for the help.

The pencil trick wears out. You'll want something more permanent anyhow.
