Is my drive dead or just acting weird? I want to use it in my build!

I am building a new rig and have two harddrives. One is a Western Digital 40gb 7200rpm IDE hdd and the other is an 80gb Western Digital 7200rpm hdd.

I was planning on using the 80gb and the windows xp already installed on the 40gb hdd for my new build. However, the 80gb hdd is making a strange sound...I can't describe it, all I can say is that it is louder then the 40gb hdd. It kinda sounds like when the hdd is in heavy use and searching for something, not the normal humming sound.

Well anyway, I went to boot up the computer with that hdd only...it doesn't have anything on it and xp is on the 40gb. I thought the computer would still atleast boot without xp, but it gives me an error code "ntfs missing error." Is it just cause I tried to boot without xp or is my hdd done?

I don't really need over 80gb, but 40gb isn't shit for a new build! Help
