Is my dreamcast a dud or do they all act like this?

Most of the time this thing works great, but occasionally I will switch CD's and the DC will just not load the game. These are retail CDs and its happened a couple of times. It will just keep loading the sega splash screen then back to the DC default menu.

Also, I have had crazy taxi 2 freeze on me when I just started a new game. It usually does this on the first go around, I reset it and it doesn't happen again.

Is this sort of thing common with the dreamcast? Otherwise I will swap it out before they are all gone.

I've only had problems with one game on my DC. Unreal Tournament crashes badly, all other games are flawless.

I've had one "jam" in which it would insist no CD was in there....I took it back while I still could. My new one work great.

Yes exactly and it drive me crazy, shutting off won't help either. Theres no rhyme or reason. I may just swap it while I can.

Hmm, mine never seems to run into any problems. What surface is your dreamcast placed on? You might want to check that it's not on any type of deep carpet, and check to see if the fan is working and isn't obstructed by any objects.

I've had that problem with THPS2 but it hasn't done it recently. There is no explanation for it because the GD-ROM is very clean.

Might be an idea. I found that if I pushed the lens all the way in to the middle, it would work after that. But I was having visions of my NES and having to go through a bizarre voodoo ritual and blood sacrifice everytime I turned it on.
Of course, being so astute, I returned the whole thing and they gave me another whole package. But one of the controllers is kinda busted. It still works, but the mushroom doesn't move as smoothly as you like...it's visibly more used than my other one was. The DC they gave me wouldn't even turn on. So I took that one back, the whole set, and he just swapped out the deck. So I got a better DC at the cost of a somewhat crappier controller.....but controllers being so cheap, I'll live.
