Hey all... my XP pro machine crashed last night. Was stuck in a boot/bsod loop when I noticed it.

Anyway, went into the recovery console, couldn't get a dir on c: (enumeration error), so I did a chdsk /r which ran most of the night.

After it completed, I was able to dir c:, but it was hanging during boot. Did a repair install & I'm up again.

I grabbed a s.m.a.r.t. checker called DiskCheckup, and it's showing a few problems... should I get a new drive?

This is what it says... I bolded the C6 and C8 codes where it lists a warning and a fail.

Look in event viewer, are there any disk errors noted in the log? When my disk was failing, I was getting SMART warnings in the event viewer log, too. More than likely it's time to RMA that drive.

Makes me wonder if I'm next on the list...

My Hitachi 80G SATA drive suddenly crashed last night... it sounded like it was banging its head against the wall again and again. Now Windows XP takes forever to load up, but once it does the system seems to be stable (I'm typing on it right now). It will intermittently decide to access the drive again and again, I have no idea why....

My smart codes or S.M.A.R.T. codes doesn't show any problems

What I wanted to double check was do these smart error codes unquestionably point to a hardware problem with the drive, and exclude any concerns over memory/cpu issues causing data corruption on the drive?

Just want to make sure I'm targeting the right component for replacement... and not wasting postage trying to RMA the drive...

Thanks!

i'd go to western digital support site and check on the warranty, then choose to run the diagnostic tool. if it errors, it will give an error code to input on the rma. i'd do an advanced rma online (need a credit card) and they will ship one to you quickly. ghost everything to the new one, then send the old one back.

i'd trust their online tools. s.m.a.r.t is pretty smart, but isnt always 100%. however, that being said, you did have boot probs and such, so it might be on the money.

Thanks for the tips guys.... bought a new maxtor 160 last night, but now I'm really having problems!

I started a new thread here.

PS - that for the WD utility tip, I'll run it after I get my system back up.
