Is my Deathstar Dead?

edit: Deathstar = IBM Deskstar 40GB HDD. Some were confused

I returned from a MNF party last night to find my computer's monitor would not "wake-up" from power save mode, and my keyboard was frozen. (CAPS Lock was not functioning.) I rebooted the computer and everything appears to be fine... ie no blue screen of death. However, once Win2K loads my wall paper just sits on the screen.
No Icons.
No Task-Bar.
No Start Menu.
Nothing but a mouse curser and my background.

So I Ctrl-Alt-Del and tell my computer to restart. (suprisingly my Task- Manager comes up just fine.) While it's shutting down, it says iexplore.exe is not responding....End Now? So I go ahead and end it and restart. This kind of thing has happened before where iexplore just gets confused. However, after multiple reboots I get the same thing.

I have Go-Back installed and I tried reverting the drive to before the crash. No dice. Goback crashes while it is reverting. This is what makes me think it might be a hard drive issue.

For system specs, check my sig. The only addition I made was adding a SLK-800 and a YS-Tech Tip magnetic fan over the weekend. Keeps my CPU temp 10C lower than before. I can't see this being the reason that it decided to crash now. It worked fine for 24 hours of running UD after I installed it...

Please help, I don't want to format! 😱

My 40gb Deskstar finally croaked last week. Luckily I had an extra Maxtor laying around I got cheap after rebate.

your HD MIGHT be dying but try this...

Go into task manager, and close everything you can close.

Then click "run task" and when the browser pops up, find "explorer.exe" in your windows directory

choose it.... now that MIGHT work

I assume you mean iexplore.exe. I will certainly try that.

I also have the disc with DFT on it to try as well.

Any other possibilities?

Assuming it is my drive...is there much difference between the 40GB Western Digital SE WD400JB and the WD800JB? I don't want to make a rash decision, but I kinda need a functioning system...

it took me far too long to realize that deathstar wasn't a pet name for your computer

Ran an Emergency Repair Disk at 4:30 before my classes.

Came back at 11, my desktop is up like normal.

Backing up everything I can think of now. Scared to death of rebooting...

I had an issue with my win2k install when I played with Litestep. After I unistalled it, my computer would boot to only desktop and mouse. I found that by hitting control-alt-delete for task manager and click on run and typing in C: i could get my computer working.

No, he doesn't mean iexplorer.exe. Explorer.exe is the windows shell...it controlls things like the desktop icons, the taskbar and start menu. So if its not starting up automaticly, theres a possibility to start it up manually

I will run the DFT once I get the nerve to reboot again. :/

I will try running C: or explorer.exe if it happens again.

Thanks to all for your help!
