Is my Crucial DDR Ram defective?

I upgraded from one stick of 256MB PC2100 DDR Ram (2.5 CL) and bought another of the same kind. Well, now I have more ram, but it seems like there is just random lag sometimes...

Could this be due to a defective ram chip that I got? or something?

Or maybe it's that the 512MB RAM is across two chips... would that cause this problem? Should I get one 512MB chip?

Try running with each of the chips alone.

Download and run a memory testing utility on each one. Use Google to find one.

It's possible that the memory is defective. When I was having problems with my Crucial ram, I wasn't fortunate enough to be getting recoverable errors - my computer would just randomly power off or cold start.

Here is a memory testing utility that runs off a floppy boot disk so as to rule out OS or software conflicts: http://www.memtest86.com/
