Is my cpu too hot?

I have an Athlon 64 3700+ on an ASUS A8N-E. It's not overclocked and has the retail HSF. It runs consistently around 52-55 degrees C. Is this hotter than it should be? What are the symptoms of an overheated cpu?

Probably a bit hot, but partly depends on your room temp. Is that under load or when it's idle?
Signs of a seriously overheated CPU are your computer turning off.

Thats idle. I've seen it get up to 60+ when running prime95. My room is a bit hot (85+ right now) so maybe that's it. It doesn't ever turn off. The only problem I have seen is when loading web pages it takes excessively long, gets too many page not found errors, and the back button sends it to a page not found error as well. I didn't know if it being so hot was causing a problem with the memory or something.

My AthlonXP 2400 is running at 85 degree's Cent. It's hot where the computer is located. No aircontioning.
I have a
Epox 8K3A+ Motherboard and for some reason it reads about 20 degree's hotter than actual temp.
Every few months I re-apply thermal paste. Using a quiet fan on the heatsink and less air volume.
