is my cpu REALLY running at 68 celsius??!?

hi new here, and could use some help. I have ECS L4VXA2 mobo (i know i know POS) with intel p4 2.5 ghz chip. have had freezing issues for some time now with this computer and I just kinda assumed/hoped it was an insufficient power supply. just upgraded from a 350w to a antec 380 (sonata case) and am still having issues.

So i get MBM 5 and run it and it says my case is at like 75 celcius and my cpu at 68! this is with cpu usage between 0-10%. now this would probably explain the freezing. but can It really be running that hot?! also, uh, what the hell should i do?!

It could.....I would check to make sure you have hsf on correctly and tight and have sufficient thermal paste used as recommended levels....

At 68-75 some boards should start experience thermal throttling which can be disguised to look like mini freezes but is just really chugging along slowly....


Do a search for a simple program that can detect thermal throttling... Called ThrottleWatch...

Try blowing any dust out of your heatsink and the rest of your system.

Also a good idea to remove the HS, clean the CPU and heatsink. Reapply thermal compound and reseat it. Many times I have seen bad contact between the CPU and HS to cause temp increases higher than normal.

I have ecs k7vta3 that always report 63c even thought it is about 41-47c, this mobo is messed up. Thought the board temperature is closer, 36c or 97f

well, I am quite teh noob. This computer is the first one I have built myself and I uh...yeah...never actually used that thermal paste. Didnt know anything about it. So I will put some of that on. Do you think that will lower the temp to a normal amount?

Also, is my case so hot simply because my cpu is hot? If the cpu cools down will the case go down with it?

That should definitely get it to safe temps. The case may not cool down much if at all. The heat generated by the CPU is still there, it's just been dissipated more effectively by the heatsink. It sitll ends up in the same place (ie, your case).
