Is my coworker cheating the company?

We have an employee who claims his personal/work phone was stolen last week. We ended up getting him a business phone on our company account for work. I called the (stolen) number from my private line here at work and he answered. I asked him if he had somehow found his phone. He said " No this is a prepaid phone I bought this weekend"

How can he get the same number on a prepaid phone off of a supposedly stolen phone? Dont you have to port the number, go through a stupid process etc...

I think he's cheating the company out, but the boss is reluctant to believe me. The reason why he was not included in the business plan from the start is because he takes advantage of business items for personal use...

what do you think?

I think you need more evidence in order to make accusations.

A number can be ported in a few hours. I think most prepaid carriers are a little slower but I don't have a ton of experience with it.

He's probably in the clear. A friend of mine lost his phone and Rogers switched his number to a new phone and SIM card. Not only that, but the whole idea behind number portability is that the number can be switched between providers, handsets etc.

If you call his provider, they'll probably tell you they do in fact do this for stolen/lost handsets.

Why isn't he provided with a company phone to begin with? Does the company expect him to use his personal phone for business?

Why do you care? Is this affecting you personally, or are you just pissed that he gets the perk of a company phone?

Are you a manager or supervisor? If not, MYOB.

but if its a company issued phone, how does he have the ability to do that or why wouldn't he report the port to the company?

and why would he go out and buy a phone with his own money if the company paid for the original?

you may not have enough proof, but it sounds really fishy.

reread op and i assume the stolen phone was one he bought himself?

so if he went and bought a new one, why does he need the company to buy one for him or why did they agree to it?

Manager, yes

Examples of past crap: Takes business tools for personal use. Uses company property to store personal items.

I just need to find out if a number can be ported so quickly. It just seems ridiculous. I gave him the benefit of the doubt until I spoke to him and he acted really nervous/weird.

I probably wont do anything just yet, and bust him on with GPS tracking and calling.

We've already busted him on lying about tickets, running red lights, etc..

The only reason he's not fired is because he lives close to a warehouse. They use him as a human watchdog. lol

If it's his personal phone, what right do you have to investigate?

You should've made sure that the phone was under the company's contract so that you have full access to the account.

As opposed to surfing a non work related online forum and posting during business hours? Hahaha. Pot meet kettle...

...you shouldn't have brought it to your boss without complete evidence. You THINKING your co-worker is cheating the company and taking it to your boss without solid proof will make you look bad.

I don't believe its that hard to get a pay as you go phone with the same number, especially if you do it with the same company you had your other phone with... I think all services have a pay as you go plan.

Anything that affects the bottom line ultimately affects every employee so if you are aware of an employee defrauding the company then it yes it does affect you personally in the long run. Turning a blind eye to employee misconduct is really nothing more than a corporate version of "No snitching".

I don't have experience with porting to a pre-paid service. I do know that it's very quick to port the number to an entirely different account. Switched from AT&T to T-mobile recently, and the number was ported and live on the new account all within 30 minutes or so.

it sounds suspicious, but you need further proof. Contact the original carrier and see if you can determine whether the number was actually ported and/or reported lost/stolen.

they deactivate the simcard and issue a new one w/ same number.

why would they give a new number because a phone was stolen ?

Again...What business does he have probing into the personal account of an employee?

You have left out important info, or atleast i missed it when I browsed through.

Was the phone his before he started or the companys?
Was the number his old number that he switched over or did the company activate the number from their account?
Why not ask to see his phone that he claimed he just bought?
