Is my CDRom drive dying?

My CD rom drive seems to be acting strangly. Sometimes it makes little noises like something is lose inside and other times, when i put a CD in the drive and double click the icon in 'my computer' XP crashes out of 'my computer' and my desktop is gone. Then other times it seems to work fine. My new plextor burner never gives me these types of problems. My CDrom drive is going on 3 years old, so is it just time to get a new one?
thanks,

Guess I don't know exactly what you mean by "funny noises" but if it's something other than what it use to sound like, I'd recomend cleaning it first, and if that doesn't help I'd replace it. A bad CD ROM drive can really screw up a stable computer and for about $39.00 you can pick up a good drive.

As kmike75 said - try to clean the drive, if that doesn't help just get a new one. I wouldn't spend too much time trying to troubleshoot the problem - its just not worth the effort.
