Is my cd-rom drive bad?

My cd-rom drive recently started freezing the computer whenever I stuck any type of cd in (normal, cd-r, cd-rw). Sometimes if I took the cd out the computer would return back to normal, as if it was freezing because it was trying to read the cd. At first I thought it was a windows problem, but after removing and then re-adding the cd-rom the problem still persisted. I then tried removing EZ CD Creator and that too didn't fix the problem. I then tried booting from my Windows 98 SE cd and it wasn't able to read the cd (and I know the cd isn't bad). Is there anything else I can do or is my CD-ROM dead? Its a Philips PCRW804 CD-RW drive if that helps. I have the same drive in another computer and it works fine so thats why I am wondering if this other one is dead.

Thanks for any replies,

Disregard that last post, fixed the problem. I think the power connector was bad, it had a brown spot near the connector end so I switched to an unused connector and it works now. I guess the voltages coming from the bad power connector were fruity or something so the cd-rom couldn't operate properly. *shrug*
