Is my case ATX? Mini ATX?

I have an old Compaq Evo desktop whose case I am thinking to reuse as it is in a good shape and is of right size. Is there anyway of knowing what type of motherboard it will take? In general, how can you tell such a thing for a brand name computer (HP / Compaq)?

I don't think you'll be able to fit any atx/mini atx mobo's in those desktop cases, they usually have their own specific design and use a riser card for expansion cards, not to mention the power supply's are very low wattage.

You might be able to fit an mATX motherboard in the case. I currently have a Compaq case that has a replacement motherboard in it. I will have my Antec 300 tomorrow though. The Compaq has absolutely no airflow in it at all. You can get nice quality cases pretty cheap now.

Reusing OEM custom cases is so dicey I don't do it. Just don't. Take them to the scrapyard instead.

Edit: The main reason is, usually the power-on switch and other front-panel connectors are all custom, instead of nice seperate wires like whitebox cases are.

There are a number of OEM towers that are completely standard, even the front panel devices and connectors. Not just standard, but have nifty features such as removable drive rails, drive cages, and snap-in cable looms. The cabling for front panel devices and ports can be really beefy with good shielding as well.

The slim tower, thin client or bookshelf, and desktop (not tower) chassis are almost always going to have some proprietary or non-standard features, though.

I guess the way to find out is by actually trying it. The idea was to recycle the 3-4 systems I have in the garage. The new cases are quite cheap, and given the uncertainty, might be the only way to go.

Why not just open them up and see if matx/atx sized mobo's would fit first, btw what models are those?
