I have this problem in world of warcraft where the frame rate will suddenly drop unexpectedly. I was running around one particular area to test this, where I was getting a pretty good 35-45fps. Then, the screen does this split-second 'blink', and then I'm getting 20-25fps in the same area of the game. If I switch back to the windows desktop for a minute, and go back into the game, the framerate is back to normal (until the next time it happens).
It seems to me that the card is throttling down based on the temperature it reaches, because I think it happens when the card approaches 74 C. I had RivaTuner monitor the temperature while playing, and it seems like this is what's going on. The framerate drop coincides with the rising temperature.
I'm already considering an after-market cooler for the card, in case it is a heat issue, but is there some way I could tell the card not to throttle down at this temperature, and maybe have it wait a little while longer? Maybe some option in RivaTuner or some other program?
(It's a bfg geforce 6800gt agp)
