is my cable good if a speed test says it beats t1

Welcome tp AnandTech Network Forum.

Whatever is the relation to T1is meaninless.

When you subscribe to a service you probably was quoted an expected "Speed".

What you get should be within an acceptable range of the contract?s quoted Speed.

Example, my Cable contract calls for 6Mb/sec. and I get 6.2Mb/sec. or download of 625KB/sec., that means that I am getting what I am paying for.

Optimizing & Measuring the "Speed" of Internet Connection.

DSL or Cable Internet, what should I get?

:sun:

IMHO you get a consistent speed test results at http://miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123/. There are other NDT servers, google ndt servers, but this site gives me results that are close to what I am experiencing.

The cnet site thinks:
Cable/DSL 1.5Mbps
Full T1 1.544Mbps

Most cable is 5 mbps+ these days and full T1 of 1.544 would be a rip off

You get 1.5 upload on a T1 though, compared to 512-ish on a cable/dsl connection, not to mention the latency.

Most importantly, it's the SLA. When was the last time you've heard a T1 line going down? With cable/dsl, it's almost a weekly event. And when you call your ISP, the best answer they will give you is that it will be up whenever they feel like fixing the problem. You do get what you pay for...

T1 is like a Filet Mignon as Compared to DSL/Cable which is a Ribeye. DSL/cable may look bigger and better but it doesn't have the quality of a Filet Mignon.
