Hello all,
Over the weekend I built my very first system...
After putting it all together and formatting / partitioning the HD, but before installing the O/S, I attempted to update the BIOS to the current version (Intel D875PBZ version P12). I ran the BIOS update via a bootable floppy, and during the update, something went wrong... my Floppy Drive started making really loud continous seek noises, which continued for about 10 minutes before I rebooted my system.
At the time, I was spazzing out because I was afraid I had nuked my BIOS, but when I restarted my system and went into the CMOS, the BIOS had not updated, but everything seemed OK...
I then decided to forgoe the DOS BIOS update and went ahead and installed the O/S (WinXP). During the installation of the O/S, it hung up on me several times at the same point (configuring drivers?), but after 4 or 5 reboots, it finished installing.
I then installed all my chipset drivers and then ran the graphical version of the BIOS update. During the BIOS update process, I got a single CheckSUM error message, but then my system rebooted and in CMOS it shows the new BIOS version (P12)...
However, I keep having a problem with a second non-existant O/S showing during boot. I have deleted it from the boot.ini, but it keeps coming back after a few restarts...
Aside from these boot issues, my system is stable (at least, so far as I've been using it). I would like to have to avoid flushing and reinstalling everything if I can avoid it, but I am afraid that if the BIOS is corrupted, then the problem will just ge worse over time and if that is true, then it would be better to fix it now than later...
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
