Is my Athlon XP1600 dead? Need diagnosis, thanks

My barebone system

Soyo Dragon Lite MB with VIA KT333 chipset
1 stick 256 MB DDR RAM
Athlon XP1600 CPU
Dragon ORB 3 CPU fan
Visiontek Geforce 1 DDR
generic floppy disk

I got my system to POST the first time, set the FSB to 133, same with RAM speed.
After a reboot to install my hard drive, I can't get my system to POST again. I noticed that my CPU fan had stopped working, the Soyo motherboard would automatically shut off to prevent overheating. I exchanged the CPU fan for another one (the same type). Now the fan work, the motherboard powered up, but I still can't get my system to POST. I did noticed the CPU was very hot after the first fan failed.

I don't know the answer, but I'd just say that I wouldn't assume your CPU is dead just yet. I've done several things in the last week or two that cause my the system I'm building to stop posting and nothing's dead. A variety of issues so complex and mind boggling I can hardly remember them. Just something like not having a component powered or properly connected can cause your system to not post. A bad cable, even. I have two systems now and it's great for troubleshooting things, being able to swap components, cables, etc. There's practically nothing I can't swap out for something else if I get to that point. It's better to have a good intuition how to proceed, though. A lot of options are great but knowing what to do is better. Good luck.

Yeah, well, you might be perfectly right. But, like I say, I had a lot of stuff going on the last couple weeks that had me thinking stuff was fried, etc., including my main HD, what have you. I discovered innocuous reasons. Most of the time it is something innocuous but often it seems like a MUCH bigger issue, OK? Like I say, good luck!! Don't toss that CPU until you test it in a known good system, I say.

My CPU is dead 🙁, tested with a friend's system. Yeah, there were a lot of beeps, so annoying that I turned it off! A sad day.

I bought a 1700+ for $58 shipped about 5 weeks ago I guess. Found on Pricewatch. You can probably set things up to turn off your system if the CPU temperature reaches a threshold value, say 65 C. In the BIOS or maybe with Motherboard Monitor 5 or similar program. A CPU fan can always go belly up and the only thing between you and a dead CPU in that case is that protection.
