is my athlon xp dead?

I got an Athlon XP 1800+ from a website and put it in my K7S5A, which was working great with a Duron, but I could only do 100/100. The next day, I couldn't even boot, and after lots of testing, determined the mobo was dead (so I took it in to the store and they agreed). Anyways, I got a new mobo, and to my dismay it didn't boot. So I tried my Duron, and it did boot. The K7S5A is rev 3.1 and the 02/02/06 bios. I tried putting it in an A7V, but it didn't boot. Are there more things I should try, or is it dead? Also, is there any chance that it was faulty and it wasn't me that broke it? I am quite sure I didn't burn it, but am a bit concerned I crushed it trying to get the clip on one time. Visually I can't see anything, although one time when I did take the heatsink off there was a bit of black grease on the ceramic and on one vertical edge of the core (does that make sense?), that I didn't understand how it got there (I am using Arctic Silver, but it couldn't burn?). Also, is it harmful to have a stray spot of Arctic Silver on the ceramic? I also had to bend a corner pin back to straight, but this couldn't kill the CPU?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just at a point where I'm getting really frustrated with working on computers -- I have worked on so many, but still have these types of problems, and I can't really figure it out cause I don't understand the more basics of how the hardware works, the "black grease" being the best example (I now wish I took a pic of it, I was thinking of it). I guess I need to read some books.

first thing i would try is putting that cpu in another system if avible, if not troubleshoot with what you have. remove everything but video card, and a stick of ram and try to boot. make sure all jumpers are correct and power supply is on/connected. and that video card/prcessor/ram are all seated correctly. The black stuff, did the heatsink come with thermal paste? to sleepy to type more, good luck finding the problem.

I have the exact same problem. I too thought it was the motherboard. I have never had a CPU fail (although this is my first AMD).

My system won't do ANYTHING when I try to power up. I have tried different cases/ps and motherboards.

I was getting ready to return my second motherboard... when I got to thinking.... it really does not make sense (2) motherboards bad? So I am kinda leaning towards my CPU as being the culprit.

If the CPU goes out.... will you get ANYTHING at all when you try to power up?

Thanks.
