Is my Asus K8U-X MB toast?

My power supply quit and I am afraid it may have taken out the MB with it. I am hoping there is some trouble shooting step, or idea I'm missing. When I connect a good power supply, the board immediately shows the green power on light, and the heat sink fan spins up - looks promising but no post.

What has me baffeled though, is that when I say it immediately powers up, I mean that I am not activating the case power switch. The board should start in "sleep" mode, and wait for the case pwr switch to spin up the fans, etc, but shorting the power switch pins (or reset) does nothing. Any thoughts or suggestions much appreciated!

If your board is socket 754, smksuperstore has an asus model (w/via chipset) very cheap in the closeout section. Only problem I had with it was getting the sata port recognized during a fresh windows install. If your heatsink was seated properly against the cpu, chances are it's the board. But I've had memory go out with similar symptoms. They also have a 754 3000 for $14 shipped. I don't recommend investing in old technology, even when it's cheaper. I bought these parts for spares only. My main pc is now Intel.

Yes, it is a socket 754. I am hoping to salvage it to use as a HTPC. New tecnology would mean a new cpu, PCI express video, new memory etc. Can't really justify buying all new hardware for the project. I already have two good socket 754 CPUs, memory and a x800 AGP video card (and two ATI 9600 pros). If I can get this mb to work, or find a cheap socket 754 w/AGP video slot replacement, I can spend $150-$200 on a nice quiet HTPC case/ power supply and be set.

I tested the MB both with and w/o the memory installed, with the same result.

I appreciate the smksuperstore tip. That is a good price, and I would jump on it. Unfortunately, they are showing it as temporially out of stock.

You can also check computer geeks. Sometimes they have socket 754 boards cheap. Newegg hasn't had as many lately in their open box section. Mwave also has some refurb boards, but you have to check the specs carefully. I would sell you my smk board, but I would have to take a loss. I don't get low cost shipping. It's getting very expensive.

Found another cheap agp 754 asrock board at 3btech for $23.99 shipped. I've done business with both 3b and smk so I know they're ok. Asrock america will sell you a backplate for some of it's boards for $5 shipped, last time I used their service.

Looks like that asrock from 3btech with free shipping is the answer. A back plate would be nice, but I can make do without if need be. Thanks for your help!
