The system detects the drive on POST but FDISK is unable to access the drive as is WinXP installation. I'll try to describe the problem, but my friend was using the sytem and i wasn't paying close attention. WinXP was installed on the system and he said the system had been acting goofy the last couple days. 1st i noticed a couple programs icons on the desktop had blank icons as they would when the executable is missing. My friend rebooted the machine and it said a system file was corrupt or missing (not sure what file). We tried the recovery deal but it got us nowhere as the was unresponsive in general and the HD LED was lit. So i tried to format and reinstall. It formatted in NTFS fine and during the install (towards the beginning i got a dll error of some sort and it sayed the installation could not continue. So i rebooted and WinXP took forever to go through its steps and now it says it can't access the drive although it sees it and displays the drive size. So the i tried a dos boot disk and FDISK can't access the drive either. I tried a different cable and the other IDE port but no help. what do you think?

i just noticed something else on POST that i don't think i used to be there. When it lists the drive model it shows IC35L040AVER07-0 ER40A44A. I don't think it used to have the ER4OA44A, but i'm not sure.

There have problems reported when NTFS is running on IBm's GXP, it formats and runs OK then data lloss and corruption to follow.
I ran into the same problem with my IBM's running NTFS on win2k, I installed ok, then blue screens and data loss.
I switched over to the 12000JB WD and problems disappeared.
