Is my 5850 underperforming?

Just finished moving everything over to my new UD3P yesterday. Fresh reinstall of Win7 64 bit. I went to look at the Windows Experience Index and was shocked to find that my 5850 only scores a 6.0 for both graphics and gaming graphics while everything else is 7.3 or better. Is that about right or is there something wrong with the card? I've heard of people with it only running x4 or something. To clarify, I have it installed in the pci-e slot closest to the cpu.

No, that's correct. The WEI graphics and gaming graphics scales currently max out at 6.0.

Vista could go to a max of 5.9, 7 has a maximum of 7.9.

I also get a 7.5 with my stock 4870. There is definitely something wrong with your setup.

Try running CPU Z and going to the mainboard tab and seeing if you are at 16x. Did you have the latest drivers installed before or after you ran the test? Performance numbers will be lower with the video card if you did the windows experience test before you had drivers installed. I couldn't confirm since I've never tried it, but if you run the test with the driver forcing lots of anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering on, your score might be lower.

You might want to run 3DMark Vantage & see if that score is in line with other 5850's, just as another comparison. Make sure you're running the 9.12 drivers & the Hot Fix.

Hey thanks for the replies. This WEI is with 9.12 (didn't try hotfix though.) Gonna try these suggestions!

Hmm... x16 seems right but CPU-Z says my 5850 is running at 400 core and 1000 memory?

That sounds like the problem. It would explain your lower than normal performance mark. It seems like your card is staying in its 2D clocks at all times. CPU Z should report your card's 3D clocks, not the 2D ones. So your GPU is staying that low even when it is being fully taxed.

I would just go into Catalyst Control Center and manually set your card to 725 GPU and 1000 memory(The proper 5850 clocks). Is it possible you were changing the clocks before, but mistook the 2D clocks for what the card should be set at when you decided to set it back?

Don't rely solely on WEI for checking performance. The CPU score for WEI is quite inaccurate imo.

I had this issue before with my 5850 and WEI. I would have GPU-z open and watch the core/mem speeds and sometime during the WEI test, it would down-clock me from stock clocks to 400/900 - and after the WEI test was over, the card would still be at 400/900 (not the usual 157/300 of 2D mode). The only way to get back to 750/1000 was to restart the system - manually setting them in CCC Overdrive had no effect.

Not sure what the underlying issue is, but I've got WEI scores anywhere from 6.0 to 7.7 on video with my 5850.

the reason for my low score is that the test will not trigger 3d clocks on my rig. I really don't care, but just wanna try to get it to work right without much hassle.
