Is my 3DMark06 Score low?

I just upgraded my 8800GT (512MB) to Sapphire 5850 Toxic (2GB), with Q6600 @ 3.2, 4GB Ram (only 3.5 recognized since my XP is 32 bits). Ran 3DMark06, score was 14XXX with 8800GT, and only 17XXX with 5850. I was expecting the score to be higher after the upgrade. Is the CPU holding it back?

3dmark06, especially the free edition limiting you to 1280x1024, is effectively a CPU benchmark. Try benchmarking at 1920x1200 with FSAA and the results will be quite different. The 8800GT is still a very potent card at low resolution / no fsaa but is certainly no match for a 5850 2GB card.

After checking at Futuremark's site, there's a 3DMark Vantage. Is that like the latest version of 3DMark06? If not, what's the difference between the two?

3dmark Vantage is the new version. A free version is also available for it. Best if purchased tho as you can change settings and play around.

Not sure what a 5850 scores in 06 version.

In vantage version mine in sig scores 18.9k 950/1300. When bumped to 1000/1300 scores 19.7k

If memory serves, Vantage doesn't work on XP does it ?

I ran 06 as well on XP Pro....9800GTX @ stock and a E7200 @ 3.2 and my score is 13428.

Something is holding you back, could be anything.

Maybe the video card is not getting enough juice,,, thx gl

Guess you can't try vantage if you have xp.

What ati drivers are you using?

Did you use a driver cleaning utility to remove nvidia drivers?

Try to upgrade to Windows 7, DX9 games will not tax enough your GPU giving you CPU limited situations. I scored with my setup without Crossfire 17280, with Crossfire on I scored 22146. Considering that my CPU is faster, I'm still so CPU bound in 3DMark06. Stuff like Ram timings affects the score considerably. Also the lack of power and inmature drivers, specially in Windows XP since ATi and nVidia put most of their muscle to Windows Vista/Windows 7 development to optimize newer API's.
