Is my 1800+/PAL 8045 rig running too hot?

Epox 8KHA+ board, PAL 8045 mounted with Arctic Silver II and a PC Power and Cooling Silencer fan. Idle is in the 42-45C range. Is this about right? I know I have a weak fan on it so it'll be a little hotter than average, but I'm concerned that maybe I didn't put the AS on correctly...

That's about right. My XP's run between 41-45 up to around 49-50 under load. But I'm also using light weight fans (Panaflo L1A). These are in a dually on a Tyan Tiger MP using a couple of 80-60 adapters. If you want to bring it down some you will need to go with a different fan.

I just want to make sure I mounted the HS and applied the Arctic Silver correctly. The temps don't bother me, per se. Just looking for comparison numbers. Thanks!

your numbers sound like you have a good connection with your processor, a good heatsink, and a #$#@ty fan
i wouldnt expect you would get any lower with that processor and that fan

It's hardly a "#$#@ty " fan. He just needs to decide if he wants quiet or lower temps. If you can stand the noise then put a screamer of a fan on there and you will see your temps go down. If you like to hear yourself think then keep the quiet fan and put up with the higher temps. If you aren't having any heat related problems then I wouldn't worry about your current setup.

Might want to try lapping your heatsink and reapplying the thermal compound. I just built an XP 1800 system w/ a Volcano 6CU+ Heatsink/Fan. It's running at 28ºC. And no, I don't live in Alaska.

What motherboard and what ambient case temp. Bear in mind that if you have a different MB, you can't compare wtih Dukdukgoos' temps at all reliably.

If you're reading your temps with a program that utilizes the MPs internal diode reading capabilities, then you can't compare wtih temps off an 8kha+.

A good rule of thumb for thermal management is Case ambient < 5 degrees higher than room ambient and CPU <10 degrees higher than case. A good CPU target is 30-35 at idle and no more than 10 degrees rise during CPU intensive use. Never exceed 60 degrees!!

What are you basing your CPU "temperatures" guideline on? That's misinformation to a degree, since there are several mb's that regularly read 25+C over case temp on the "norm" due to thermistor location and compensation implemented by the manufacturer in an attempt to give better readings.

For example, it is quite common for an 8kha+ to read 10-15C over case when under load. That is the NORM, not the exception. Based on your guideline, people are automatically running too hot???

Also, look at a7v series and k7t-turbo mb's. They regularly readin in the 50-60C range, again as the norm. YOu can't make broad-based assumption statements about socket-thermistor temps in any case. There are far too many variables.

Please, everyone take Mike's advice and stop contributing to the misinformation by just saying your CPU temperature without any context. At the very least you should include the following information:

- CPU type and speed
- Motherboard
- Heatsink & fan type
- Monitoring program
- what CPU was doing when you measured
- temperature of room the computer is in (ambient)
- temperature of case/chassis (if you only have 2 temp. readouts, it's the lower one)
- and last but not least, temperature of CPU
