Is my 1700+ a dud?

I got a TBred B 1700+ last week with the stepping:

I can't get it to run stably in Prime95 at anything higher than about 1900 Mhz (200x9.5 or 166x11.5 are both stable) at default voltage (1.6v) and it takes raising the voltage to 1.7v to get it to run at 2 GHz. And at 2 GHz I ran Prime95 stable for a couple of hours but my computer was randomly beeping the whole time which didn't sound good so I stopped it (so I'm not even sure if it can do 2 GHz stably at 1.7v). I know my chip isn't a DLT3C, but shouldn't I be able to get it higher than 1900? Under full load the temps fluctuate between 40-50 C depending on how hot it happens to be in my room. My board is a new Abit NF7-v2.0. I'm running my memory at 266 MHz because it's not stable at anything higher.
 
I would attribute it to being a DUT3C rather than being a DLT3C. DLT3C's are revised to run at 1.5v, and overclock better than any DUT3C.
 
What are you trying to run your ram timmings at? If aggressive, you may want to lower them to stock speed or even less for trouble shooting purposes.

I wouldn't completely agree with that...

there are some rare DUT3C's out there that have been capable of running at 2.4 ghz... there were a few people here that had 1700+'s running at 2.4 on air even before the DLT3C's

i agree, many 1700+'s have hit over 2GHz
 
OOO, cool, I have one of those (1.5v things)...Not in use now though, I upgraded to a 2400+. Nice to know that I got a good deal when I bought it though 🙂...Anyway, why so worried about overclocking? You will probably have to raise the voltage to do it...The limit for me with my chip was 1.66 ghz, I didn't want to take any bigger risk than that. Are processors that don't overclocked well really considered "duds"? Isn't it true that they don't all o/c the same?

Albeit at a higher vcore. He's trying to stay at or around default voltage, which is hard to do with the DUT3C's
 
well let's see about that as well...

considering that these chips are "downgrades" from 25, 26, or even 2800+'s, i don't see why the DUT3C's dont do well at default or even below default voltages....

i should have written down the max stable o/c i got from my 0302 DUT3C .... that chip made 2.3 ghz @ 1.85volts which i thought was pretty good considering....

anyway... nothing wrong with the DUT3C's....

 
My du3tc is stable at 2 gig, not much higher. that is with 1.76 actual, running very cool. I have a crap power supply though, I may be able to lower that vcore if I swap out power supplies.
 
My 0302 will do 2.2GHz at 1.8V 24/7, and has run Prime for 24 hours sucessfully, but has stability issues at higher speeds.

I also think this is PS related, as the system it's in presently has a 300W Channelwell that I got for free. It's decent, but.......

I've got one of the famous 300W Lite-Ons from Directron sitting here, I'm just too lazy to rip the system apart to swap out the other PS!
 
I wouldn't be so sure about the chip being a dud.

I found I could crank out much higher fsb frequencies on older Abit KR7-A than on a brand new Asus A7N8X deluxe running the exact same ram and 2100+ Tbred chip. Have no idea why...

Maybe you could try the chip on a different system.

I'm currently running my ram at it's default speed of 266(and default SPD settings) so that it doesn't interfere with the stability. I know I can't get the ram over 333 since its only PC2100 (possibly PC2700), so I'm never going to be able to run it at the FSB.

I'm beginging to think that maybe the problem is due to having a poor power supply. I'd think that 1.7v would be enough to get it stable at 2GHz because I've read reports of people with similar chips getting much higher than that at similar voltages, but with my power supply it might just require really upping the volts.

Is the only risk of upping the voltage the increase in temp? If I can get it stable at a higher voltage, and within a reasonable temperature, is there any other danger of having it at a higher voltage?
 
Well, when these chips first came out, people pushed them to the max! There were people running up 2.2V.....

You can safely go up to about 1.85V in everyday usage, and there are still lots of people using up to 1.9V. The DUT is more voltage tolerant than the newer DLT chips.....
