Is MPC an OK format to archive?

I want to archive all my cds to MPC at insane level and transcode music to MP3 192 VBR. Has anyone else been doing this. I want to save as much space as possible, but also preserve on quality. I heard MPC transcodes well to MP3.

I know there are other losseless formats but the amount of space you can save with MPC is pretty awesome even at the insane level. Only if there was more support for it.
 
MPC cuts out some high-frequency and low-frequency stuff most people can't hear, so it's not exactly a perfect solution. But if you want to archive lossy it's a good one to use. I'd still suggest you consider examining Ogg Vorbis at the higher quality settings.

From what I understand AAC also works similar to how MPC works. (cuts out stuff we shouldn't be able to hear) You could try maximum quality with Apple's AAC encoder, or better yet if you have Nero 6 (yes, really) you could try encoding with Nero's AAC codec via OagMachine. Apparantly Nero's AAC codec is the best on the market. Do a comparison test and see what you think.

Just my two cents. Personally I'd go with FLAC or Ogg Vorbis at max quality if I wanted to archive everything perfectly. But that's me.
 
i would recommend ogg vorbis opposed to mp3 if you want small ok sounding music files, but i whould look at FLAC or APE if you want loseless audio. (like me!)
 
Sleepwalker I was talking about archiving at mpc then to mp3 for my portable. Unfortunately, i dont have an ogg player
