I am ready to move to open my Computer Business in Downtown Hartford. However, is transporting my PC for 2 hours worth it, or should I just build or buy a new one. I am moving to West Hartford as my apartment I am renting is all ready (that took 20 years .) So, is commuting with the PC worth it?

You mean transport a computer back and forth every day?? No way, the time alone makes it not worth it. Not to mention the hassle! Riding in a car is also hard on a computer. It will wear on the electrical contacts, the contact between heatsink and CPU, etc.

Only if it's a laptop. However, since it is a "Computer" Business, you should have a Computer kicking around to make a permanent onsite PC. It's also a bad idea to be dragging your main Business PC around with you, what if it gets Lost, Stolen, or Damaged?

It is an ATX case. It is only once, and it only costs $1000. An upgrade will be nice. I build the PC 2 months ago (I have a thread on reducing the cost of a PC) not thinking I was moving :smack:.

Are you taking a bus or something? Just trying to figure out why this is a question at this point.

I am moving to West Hartford for a job. I have a 2 hour car ride along 95 and 91 to get to my new apartment. There, is that enough information for you ?

It is unclear. Are you making the 2-hour trip daily? If so, get a laptop.

Is it a single trip to a new location? Keep the desktop. Dell, Levono, HP, et al, ship thousands of desktops daily. Just make sure to secure poorly/unsupported components in the case.

I would just move it if it's a one time deal. It's not going to add that much weight to the car. Just make sure it's well secured so it does not take a beating from pot holes and stuff. i imagine you will have lot of other stuff with you like blankets and stuff, just put it over some blankets to dampen it. Do a full backup of the system before transporting it, just in case something happens. Have that backup sent to you separately after you have moved in and all is good.

When I moved from my parent's I moved several servers and PCs too, not really a HUGE deal. Kind of a pain in the ass but not the end of the world. Though in my case it was only like 15 minutes away so I just brought stuff separately so that if I get in an accident the data is on the other systems still at home. I also had a huge box full of hard drives which was all backups, those were separated into smaller boxes and transported separately along with other stuff. Had to do several trips anyway.

Im fine moving it...I just dont think it will fit with all my other stuff in my small trunk. Or even is it time for an upgrade? My $1000 PC isnt really that fast. I wasnt really that "tech" oriented .

Maybe you should give us all the details. It sounded like a simple question, and then after people have given their input you point out that it might not fit in your car.

Here's my thing...it cost you $1000 a couple months ago, which means replacing it would cost a similar amount. That has to be one of the higher costs per unit of volume that you're bringing with you. Surely something else is a lower priority, or at least a lower cost to replace?

What else is going in the car with you? Maybe pack a box of non-breakable stuff you don't need right away like seasonal clothes and have it shipped? Maybe ask a friend to hold a few items for you until you can make a return trip to pick them up? Maybe buy a friend a few beers or a video game in exchange for helping you haul your stuff?

Any one of those options is less expensive than replacing a computer.

Anyways, I am driving in an Acura TL up to West Hartford. I am bringing clothes, blankets, coats, shovels, etc. I am not renting a truck for a few reasons. I dont mind selling the desktop as I have a Razer Blade Pro Laptop I could game on.

I wonder what I would think about an Employee that brings every day (or even few time a week) a Desktop computer from Home in order to do his/her Job)?>

I do not think that it will be very positive thinking.

One can find s used Laptop that do well Win 7 for less than $200.

We moved our desktop computer from San Diego Ca to Virginia (by car). No problems, just packed it well.

I already have a laptop that I am bringing to my apt...a Razer Blade Pro. The desktop might be a little shakey. Maybe I will sell the $1000 PC for like $500 and build a new one.

I thought you were talking about moving the desktop back and forth for a daily commute. Selling a computer and building a new one so you don't have to move it an hour and a half is ridiculous. Even if it doesn't fit, just make another trip. 3 hours is less time than it will take to build a new one

So, it is about 1 hour and 26 minutes from Stamford to West Hartford.

Seriously? You can't make two trips? An hour and a half drive for $1000 is a no brainer unless you got money to burn. Even then if you're too lazy to make the damn trip go to UPS and ship it which would probably be $30.

People in this world ....

An hour and a half? Just make the 2nd trip. People drive longer than that everyday to and from work. I'm sure you can do it one time to bring your computer to your new apartment.

Another reason I want to sell it is that it isnt that powerful. I wasnt that "tech" oriented 3 months ago until I took a class. Now, I repair computers for a living. Anyways, I built it with an i3-2100  with 16GB of RAM, no SSD, cheap $50 graphics card, and thought that Hard Drives controlled the speed :smack: and now have 5TB of storage .

So add an SSD? The i3-2100 isn't bad.

Techie people don't "sell" their computer, they sell the parts they don't need anymore. :p

Not with gaming...By the time I add an SSD, upgrade graphics card, and uograde mobo and CPU it will be worth it to buy a new PC.

I don't understand how that cost $1,000 then. For that matter, I'm not sure you could get $500 for it used with no warranty, unless the buyer didn't really know what he or she was doing.

If you just plain don't want it then I guess selling it makes sense, but then I kind of wonder why the whole thing was a question in the first place. It feels to me like you just wanted us to OK your plan to sell your old computer and build one you like better.

It's your money.

 That's the only way this thread makes any sense. Not wanting to take the PC on an hour and a half drive is completely ridiculous. I drove my desktop back and forth to college (3 1/2 hour drive) dozens of times with no issues.
