Is MOCA for me?

Hi gang,

I have a separate building where I work (building B) and while I'm now relying on a wireless signal from the main house (building A), I wanted to see if MOCA would be something I could consider.

Right now, the cable coax comes in from the street and into the cable companies' box. It is split and one line goes into the main house and one line goes into my garage/apartment/office. In the house, I have the cable going to up my home run and then into my router, VOIP adapter, cable modem and all that sort of thing. I'm not exactly sure now MOCA work and if it was suppose to work "inside the house" or if it could somehow go back out and into the other building. It's all currently in the same run of coax from the street for the most part.

I realize I could get a cable modem in building B, but with a $170 cable bill around, I can't spend another $50 or whatever that would be. Would MOCA work in my situation?

yes, should work - if the splitter i 2-way and 1.5GHz or more.
if there's a common AC mains breaker box, HomePlug AV might also be an option.

Make sure you use proper entrance protection, grounding, and bonding. Any grounding imbalances will cause a current flow in the shield of the coax. It can be strong enough to injure or kill, or cause a fire, or worse (!); it might smoke your equipment.

If there's 2-wire between them, you could get a VDSL Ethernet extender. Usually cheaper and faster than MOCA.

From the diagram you are drawing, it looks like you would be firing the MOCA signal out in to the cable system. The cable co will not like that and they will cut you off once they figure out it is you sending 'extraneous signals' to the head ends. Also if they catch you messing around in their box they can call the police and have you arrested for tampering. FYI.

Yeah, imagoon, I wondered about that, too. I wondered how far out that signal would be going.

Going to do a little more reading on MOCA, but I might be onto Plan B. Sure wish I had run a hardwire when we were doing construction. Now, if I want to do that, I have to put a couple penetrations thru exterior walls. PITA.
