Is Mixing Sata and Pata possible

Hi Folks,

I'm planning on building a PC in the near future and will be using a SATA hard drive as the primary drive. My current PC uses a PATA drive and I was wondering if it is possible to install the PATA drive into the new kit as a slave? I'll be using an AMD motherboard and a 939 processor.

It would be useful to have the PATA drive for backup purposes, plus it would be a quick way to get my data onto the new kit. I'm not sure though about mixing PATA and SATA.

Anyone know if there are any issues with this or is it possible?

Thanks

Myles

Of course it is possible the only issue I see is that you may have to set your boot order in your BIOS to boot to SATA before IDE (I think IDE is usually first).

Yes, though I'd recommend installing windows on the SATA drive without the PATA drive installed. Once you get windows installed and running, plug in the PATA drive.

I say this because windows sometimes has a strange way of installing files on both drives, so that if the PATA dies, your SATA windows installation will fail.

Doesn't matter whether your drives are SATA, IDE, USB, etc. This is always good advice. When you first install windows, disable every other hard drive either by unplugging them (external) or disabling them in the BIOS. Try and get your motherboard drivers at least installed before allowing the drives to be seen.

#1 - Lower possibility of getting strange errors when installing very new bus drivers.
#2 - Correct drive placement (C:) and placement of files/swap area.

Especially as the drives and technology gets further and further away from Windows XP (2002) driver set, less and less should be present before updating Windows itself and drivers. After you do these things, then add on the hard drives and periphrials.
