I'm looking for a 19" CRT <$350 and my highest priority is easy to read (sharp) text.
Is 930SB still the best choice?

Well I would say so. I have one and the text is super sharp. Great monitor, perfect geometry. Then again you will have people with a 200 buck monitor come in and swear by it and of course they will say its the best.

I have currently have a 19" Mitsubishi Diamondtron, and my monitor is the center of attention when I go LAN'ing. Plus, it is an older model, but after 5 yrs. it still looks brand new. The only monitor I've seen with similar graphics is a Sony Trinitron.

Viewsonic G90F is only ~$190 on Newegg and is excellent. Paying almost 2x more a better 19" monitor is unjustified in my opinion. You might as well pick up a 17 inch Hitachi 174 or NEC 1760 or Sony HS-73 LCD for around $400.

i have a viewsonic p95f+b and it's great. i linked to a review below. (comes in beige as well). i've read a review or two where some people complained about the text clarity, but i think it's excellent. i suspect you can get one for around $275 shipped.

i did have to RMA my first one because it had a convergence problem, but the tech support guy was very surprised and said that this model has had extremely low return rates. he could've been BS'ing me, but he sounded sincere. anyway...it's worth checking out...i love mine.

hey, G90F is a shadow mask if you havnt noticed. there are people like me who would gladly pay over the double if asked for the better IQ of AG tube based models.

lol, thanks to bucksnort, i have one of the best monitors around =)

try to go for sony cpd-G420 if u can, its still better than the mitsubishi 930, much sharper at high resolutions, though u probably won't want to use those if u don't own a matrox :p

as regards to other monitors that i currently own...

the viewsonic g90 is a fake flat monitor
the lg t910b is ok, looks like a fishbowl behind flat glass but then i look again and i'm not sure... (it also loses screen position in the first few minutes of start up, must take a while for the caps to charge up, its bearable)

but the "BEST" 19" is the sony CPD-G420

ok, well I'm not going to be running a particularly high res, but my total video bandwidth might be a little high. I'm planning to do 1280x960@90Hz. is that going to look crappy on the 930sb?

and why is the g420 cheaper? more expensive means better right? : D but seriously though, sonys are usually more expensive anyway for the name you get, so how can this sony that's cheaper be "better"?

I had a sony gdm 400ps before the 930. The sony is a 1000 buck monitor and vastly superior to the g420. The 930 runs circles around the sony 400ps. The refreshes for the resolution you desire on the 930 is: 70, 72, 75, 85, 100 with my video card which is a radeon 9800 pro..

So you guys all have no problem with Aperature Grill monitors?

Whenever I 'test drive' an Aperature Grill monitor, I get highly annoyed by the tensioning wires in th emiddle of the screen. Does this go away over time? I have purposefully made my previous monitor purchases shadow mask because of the tensioning wires. My current monitor is pretty old (PF70 PanaFlat) and seems to be on it's last leg (takes several attempts to sync a res) and will likely be getting a new monitor in the near future.

The damper wires after a while you don't even notice them. Its well accepted as being worth the gorgeous picture and vivid colors.

For quite a whilte I forgot they even existed. Concillian, i am suspecting maybe you included too many things with white background when you test drive? For clarity of text SM monitors are better anyway, in movies (anime in my case) and games I have never noticed the lines a single instace...

well, crt's are being replaced by LCD's, CRT's are really cheap now... ppl want to save space on their tables so they go to LCD, but any expert will know that CRTs are a lot better than LCDs. that is the reason why CRTs are cheap.

g420 is probably cheaper, sony is trying to get rid of their entire crt line of products fast. but i've done a direct comparison to the G420 ad the 930 with my matrox G400 MAX , and i can say that the G420 is better, it also has that nice auto adjust feature, don't need to worry about screen sizes =)

others might not think so, and you should not base your purchase on my words, for your configuration would be different to what i currently have. but yea, if the g420 is cheaper i suggest u go for it, make sure its not refurb/used though.
