I was just snooping around Edmunds and noticed that for the E class they have the E320 CDI listed. I figured they would eventually bring them over once low sulfer diesel is for sale, but not sooner. So does anyone have any idea if they are actually bringing them over before then for certain?

Too late because I've run out of money.

I had an '83 240D several 21 years ago. Great car.

Haha yeah, no money here either. :(

I just like the idea of diesel sedans becoming more available in the U.S.(most of us would prefer not to drive a Jetta ;))

Pros:

Mileage
Generally cheaper fuel

Cons:

More polution emitted because the U.S. doesn't require low sulfer diesel fuel, which means you can't use certain pieces of emissions equipment.
Some issues in cold weather if you don't take certain precautions.(generally)
Depending on who makes the engine, it can be louder.

Another pro: Engines last nearly forever if maintained. Seriously.

The US is going to low sulfer in 2005/2006.

Just to add something, my father and I drove a Mercedes E220 CDI. while in Europe. Fantastic car, we loved it. Had enough torque (expected) and was smooth (not loud) and of course did well with gas (~37mpg IIRC)

Yes, it's coming. There've been numerous articles here about it, and I saw an in depth review on TV one day. The engine is just about the same noise and performance as the gas engine.

Yeah.... Most of the big companies offer fairly quiet diesel engines now a days, which is good, because in the past, those things could be loud. Unfortunately, Americans need to learn that they are no where near as loud as they used to be. I recently had an argument with a girl I work with, which her boyfriend decided to back her up on, that new diesel sedans are insanely loud.

I used to drive a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 300SD. *THAT* was loud! The new E320 CDI is just as quiet as anything else out there, save for electric cars.

I actually like the sound of a diesel, loud though it may be.

yeah, that's another pro: you can run a diesel on practically ANYTHING.
