Oh hi, is ur radeon 9800 pro getting really hot once u play 3d games?

Everything at stock speed, no extra cooling device on the videocard yet. will do it later.

I am thinking to put a VGA silencer REV 3 on it, but i see that Thermaltake Giant3 is huge and would like to know which perform better in overclocking?

thanks

btw the artic silencer only cools the GPU, doesnt contact the memory chips. Neither does that Giant III, it just provides a tiny copper sink for each. That said, if either of those cools the GPU significantly more than the stock cooler, it seems plausable this would reduce the amount of heat going into the PCB which hence might help the ram chips a little.

tbh I was quite surprised just how warm the air is that gets spat out the rear of the case by the arctic silencer

I've heard people who put ramsinks on their 9800p ram only gets another 10-15MHz out of their RAM. I've not sinked mine and have no problems with them. I do have the VGA Sliencer (rev 2) on my 9800p.

If you have ramsinks, I'd say go for it. If not, I don't think they're worth the trouble or the money to use them.

I have ramsinks, they get insanely hot. They will make marks on your finger if you touch them for more than a second. I'm using OCZ ramsinks that I custom cut to fit my ramsinks. I used to use them w/ a Zalman ZM80C-HP but now I use them w/ a VGA Silencer. Neither one had any problems, just make sure you use the super low profile ramsinks.

I could very well be wrong, just passing on what I learnt when I was reading up on it trying to decide whether or not to sink my ram chips.

Oh, I'd say you're right. Most Ramsinks don't do anything for overclocking. Mine won't overclock an xtra mhz more than it would before the ramsinks.

I run @ stock speeds though, and they get freakin hot.

my chips got insanely hot, so I put on some RAMsinks. I got an additional 15MHz, more with a fan blowing on them. I think they're worth it...it made a big difference in framerates on UT2k4. However, don't spend a whole bunch of money on them, and make sure you have a cooling fan blowing on them otherwise they're worthless.

I'm a bit confused but when your RAM is running at ~400MHz, how is upping that by 15MHz going to make a "big difference" in framerates? You sure that's all you changed to get a "big difference"?

if i don't put on ram sink, can i just put a fan blowing directly to them?

because i think installing ramsink is very complicate.

I am thinking put on VGA silencer R3 on the top and another 80mm fan to blow the ram... is it worth it?

Well, it was really chance: running it stock I got ~20 FPS in 2k4 with all settings maxed, so I could notice stutters. After adding RAMsinks and overclocking to 375 got me ~30 FPS. I could tell. Oh yeah, the core was overclocked too of course.

Granted, I never compared "overclocked without RAMsinks" to "overclocked with RAMsinks" so that could make a difference.

Ramsinks are NOT complicated to put on. The OCZ ones I got came with thermal tape on the backs. You just tape them onto your ramsinks. You can use a handsaw to cut them to the proper lengths.

The RAM on my Ti4600 gets hot enough to burn you and RAMsinks didn't help OCing at all. I wouldn't worry about it.

the phrase "handsaw to cut them" is complicated to me!

don't fret - VGAs get astoundingly hot - it's just what they do. I was running my 9800 pro in Dx9.0 games with settings as high as I could and still have a usable frame rate, oc'd 20% on core and memory with just the Zalman passive!

Trust me - these things can take the heat! Even if it does feel like you could cook your steak on them afterwards.

I actually switched to the Silencer, but not becuase I was unhappy with the way that the Zalman performed, just because the Zalman was heating up my case alot. Improved case temps by a couple of degrees and allowed a higher overclock on the VGA.

That's because you'll probably need a vise to have a finished product that looks okay.

yea my 9800pro gets crazy hot. even with the vga silencer on. but right now, I don't have any case fans because my case is under construction so everything is just laid out on the table. when i aimed a fan at the vga silencer and the ram (i have ocz copper ramsinks) the heatsink did feel a lot cooler. i haven't done any overclocking yet, simply because its not necessary.

silencer is way better than the zalman coolers simply because the hot air is vented out the case rather than heating up the case. feeling the heat of the card, i can only imagine how high case temps would get with that heater in there.
